PURCHASE OF VEHICLES FROM TURKEY BY FOREIGNERS

There are no restrictions on foreign nationals purchasing vehicles within the borders of the Republic of Turkey. Foreign nationals can purchase a vehicle themselves, or they can authorize a lawyer through a power of attorney by applying to the consulates with their passports and complete the vehicle purchase process in that way.

Vehicle Sale from Foreigner to Foreigner

It is possible for a land vehicle located within the borders of the Republic of Turkey to be sold from one foreign national to another. Individuals who are temporarily residing in Turkey for the purposes of work or education can purchase a vehicle from another foreigner without paying customs duties, special consumption tax, or value-added tax. They may also sell the vehicle to another foreign national who holds the same rights.

Bringing a Vehicle from Abroad

There are no restrictions on bringing a vehicle into our country from abroad. A person who currently resides abroad may bring their foreign-plated vehicle into Turkey, provided they fulfill the requirement of registering it in their passport. Citizens residing abroad, as well as foreign nationals who hold a residence permit in Turkey, are allowed to keep and use their foreign-plated vehicles in Turkey for up to 2 years (730 days) without paying any fees.

Foreign nationals who do not have a residence permit in Turkey are granted a total of 90 days within a 180-day period to use their vehicles.
The permitted duration for the vehicle can be used all at once or in separate periods. Likewise, vehicles brought into the country may be taken abroad again upon submission of a valid power of attorney.

If a person residing abroad enters Turkey with their vehicle and has brought a vehicle into the country within the last 185 days prior to the entry date, the time previously used is deducted from the total allowance of 730 days, and the remaining period is granted.

For foreign nationals entering Turkey with their vehicle (excluding those who hold a residence permit or a Blue Card), if they have brought a vehicle into the country within the last 180 days prior to the entry date, the time previously used is deducted from the 90-day allowance, and the remaining period is granted.

Foreigners who wish to bring a vehicle from abroad must reside in the country where the vehicle is registered. Additionally, the vehicle to be brought into Turkey must be registered in the name of the person bringing it. Foreign-plated vehicles owned by someone else can only be brought into Turkey through a power of attorney or rental agreement under specific conditions.

Turkish citizens holding a Blue Card and residing in Germany are allowed to bring their vehicles into the Republic of Turkey for a maximum period of 730 days. The imported vehicle may only be used by the vehicle owner and their first-degree relatives. Blue Card holders who are also German citizens must carry their driver’s license, proof of ownership from abroad, and an insurance policy recognized as valid in Turkey when entering with the vehicle.
